O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' excitement about the performance. O'Neil was given high marks by the jury. But she was a victim of significant defeats during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up within the bottom three and then bottom two. The judges were astonished at the result and exhorted fans to vote for singers with impressive singing skills, like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was consistently good, that he did not fall into the bottom 3. She was the judge.
